Bradley University NP clinicals for Virginia residents
Virginia is open to all four of Bradley University's online NP specialties: its row in Bradley's state table reads meets for FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP and AGPCNP. Virginia's board runs no approval process for out-of-state graduate programs, NPs there practice within patient care teams, and the neighbors on Virginia's northern and southern lines read very differently in Bradley's table.

Virginia next to its neighbors in Bradley's table
Bradley's online licensure table, linked from bradley.edu's State Disclosures page, gives Virginia four meets and no footnote. The neighbors tell another story. Maryland and the District of Columbia read meets for FNP only, DC residents may not train inside the District, and Tennessee reads no in every NP column. For a student in Arlington or Bristol, the safest clinicals stay on the Virginia side unless an advisor agrees otherwise. The full table is explained on Bradley's state disclosures page.

Patient care teams and your preceptor
AANP files Virginia under restricted practice. Virginia NPs sign a practice agreement with a physician on their patient care team until they can attest to the equivalent of three years of full-time clinical work. So Virginia preceptors come in two kinds: NPs inside a physician-led team, and NPs past the attestation working more independently. Bradley can approve either one.
Bradley's filter is the stricter of the two sets of rules: NPs, MDs and DOs, with NPs supervising most of your hours, and no physician assistants (preceptor requirements). Students search the Virginia share of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro, the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk area, Richmond and Roanoke. The large systems include Inova, VCU Health, Carilion Clinic, Sentara Health and UVA Health; each keeps its own student terms, and none has published a process for Bradley.
What the Virginia Board of Nursing asks of Bradley
Very little, by its own account. The board states that programs based in other states, and post-licensure programs of any kind, sit outside its regulation and approval, so Bradley has no Virginia application to file before your hours start. Two board rules that can look relevant, the one requiring 80% of clinical hours inside Virginia and the clinical-site approvals under 18VAC90-27, apply only to schools Virginia itself approves for pre-licensure education.
Virginia law also carries a student exemption. Va. Code 54.1-3001 lets an RN licensed elsewhere, without restrictions, skip a Virginia license during graduate study, but only for the clinical work the program's curriculum calls for. Bradley sets its bar higher: an active, unencumbered RN license valid where your site sits (license rules). Clear Bradley's bar and the exemption never comes into play.
Licensing, the compact and telehealth
Virginia RNs have held multistate licenses under the compact since January 2018. A Virginian with a Virginia multistate card meets Bradley's license rule at home, and that card is also honored in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland. Honored does not mean approved: a rotation outside Virginia still has to clear your academic advisor or the department chair before the term opens. The APRN Compact has no Virginia law behind it.
Telehealth needs its own check. FNP, AGACNP and AGPCNP students count virtual hours under Bradley's Telemedicine policy guidelines, which sit in MyOnline, while PMHNP students should settle the question with course faculty before any video visits go on the schedule.

Questions Bradley students ask
I live in Northern Virginia. Can my PMHNP clinicals be in DC or Maryland?
Plan on Virginia sites. A rotation in Maryland or the District counts as a bordering-state rotation, which needs your academic advisor's approval before the semester, and Bradley's table reads meets for PMHNP in neither place. A Virginia preceptor keeps your PMHNP plan inside Bradley's rules.
What does Virginia's three-year attestation mean for my preceptor?
It mainly tells you the setting. A Virginia NP who has attested to the equivalent of three full-time years can practice without a patient care team physician, while a newer NP works inside a physician-led team. Bradley can approve either, provided the preceptor meets its standard for your track.
Can I do clinicals at the Virginia hospital where I work?
Bradley's public documents are silent on precepting at your own employer or unit, so check your track's clinical packet in MyOnline and ask your academic advisor. Two rules are firm: a family member cannot precept you, and you may not be paid for practicum work. See clinicals at your workplace.
Does Virginia's preceptor incentive program cover Bradley students' preceptors?
No. The Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program rewards preceptors of students enrolled at Virginia nursing schools; under SB 405, which became law on March 31, 2026, the Virginia Nursing Workforce Center runs it for hours from July 1, 2026. Eligibility hinges on a Virginia school, which leaves Bradley students' preceptors outside it.
