Finding NP preceptors in the Chicago area as a Bradley student
Chicago's big health systems each run their own student gate, and their published lead times sit on top of Bradley's own packet deadline. Advocate asks for about two months, stretching to three if a fresh agreement has to be drawn up, while the north and northwest suburban Northwestern Medicine sites reply to applications within four to eight weeks. In practice that means bringing your own preceptor to Advocate, applying to Northwestern early, and keeping independent practices in the search from day one.

These are the systems' own rules, not Bradley's, and none of them says which schools it currently works with. Bradley does not publish its list of agreements either, so put the question to the Office of Online and Distance Education early, before you build a plan around any one site.
Advocate: you bring the preceptor, the school files the request
Advocate places Illinois inpatient NP students, but by its own description it leaves locating an NP preceptor in Illinois to the student and school. A physician or APRN may precept. If that person is employed outside Advocate and Aurora, Advocate requires a three-party preceptorship agreement among its hospital, Bradley and that outside employer, and says this can take up to three months.
The request itself goes in through myClinicalExchange from the school's coordinator, after a school affiliation agreement is in place, and it must match the preceptor's own work area. Its Illinois planning calendar sets a four-to-six-week window before the start date for NP clinical-hour requests, inside its broader two-month guidance. One more Advocate rule deserves attention: its preceptors may not sign agreements presented by the school. Bradley's preceptor packet includes a form the preceptor signs, so find out from the Office of Online and Distance Education how Bradley handles the packet for an Advocate site before your preceptor receives anything.
Northwestern Medicine: apply early, expect competition
Northwestern's north and northwest suburban group (Huntley, Lake Forest and Grayslake, McHenry, Woodstock and outpatient locations) accepts an online placement application from APRN, PA, MSN and DNP students. A committee sorts through the applications once a month, and the system tells applicants to expect a reply in four to eight weeks.
Three conditions shape your odds. Only students from schools with a current Northwestern affiliation agreement are placed. Northwestern employees receive priority over outside students, which helps if you already work there. And Northwestern is frank that applying secures nothing, since demand for spots regularly exceeds supply. The west suburban hospitals (Central DuPage, Delnor, Kishwaukee and Valley West) say their student form does not cover APRN patient-care hours, while the downtown Northwestern Memorial page addresses only students not yet licensed.
Rush and the providers outside any student office
Rush's clinical rotation pages describe undergraduate rotations at Rush Oak Park with contracted schools and publish no process for NP students. That does not close the door on a Rush clinician who is willing to precept; it means the conversation starts with the individual provider, and the site paperwork then runs through Bradley.
The same holds across the city and suburbs. When a system publishes no NP route, the workable path is a nurse practitioner or physician in an outpatient practice, community clinic or behavioral health group who agrees to take you, with Bradley then handling the agency agreement. Take a spring 2027 practicum at an Advocate hospital with an outside preceptor. Advocate's own clock can run three months, so that search belongs in the summer before, not the fall.
Licenses, borders and how we search Chicago
The Chicago metro spills into Indiana and sits close to Wisconsin, and both of those states belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact while Illinois does not. A multistate license from Indiana or Wisconsin therefore does not cover a Chicago site, and Bradley asks for an active license in the state where your clinicals happen. Bradley's handbook also keeps rotations in your approved home or admission state and asks that any cross-border plan reach your advisor or the chair before a semester begins. I live in Indiana and work in Chicago. Where can my Bradley clinicals be?
Bradley's handbook keeps rotations in the approved state of your admission or residence, so a Chicago site seen from an Indiana home is a bordering-state plan: raise it with your advisor or the department chair before the term, and expect to need an Illinois RN license. Because Illinois is outside the compact, an Indiana multistate license does not cover a Chicago site.
Is Chicago easier than a small town for finding an NP preceptor?
Chicago has far more providers to approach, yet its large systems layer their own applications, affiliation conditions and waiting periods onto Bradley's steps, as the table above shows. Independent and outpatient practices, where one provider can say yes, usually offer the shorter path. Save the hospital routes for courses that truly need them, such as the AGACNP acute care practicums.
