NUR 656: your first 200 acute care hours as a Bradley AGACNP student
NUR 656 Management of Acutely Ill Adults and Geriatrics I is the first of Bradley University's three 6-credit AGACNP management courses, with 200 clinical hours under a preceptor in an acute care setting. Those hours happen in hospitals, and hospitals run their own student processes, so this is the AGACNP placement where lead time matters most.

NUR 656 at a glance
On hours, this course is settled: the catalog and Bradley's marketing page both give NUR 656 200, supervised by the clinical preceptor, whereas they split on NUR 658. It follows NUR 655 Diagnostic Reasoning and starts the run of acute care rotations that fills most of the 750 AGACNP hours in the 2026-27 catalog.
All AGACNP routes include it, whether that is the 47-credit MSN for BSN holders, the 68-credit doctorate or the 32-credit certificate. RN-entry students reach it after the bridge courses and NUR 407.
It is also the first course covered by the AGACNP Clinical Packet and Guidelines, which the handbook lists for NUR 656, NUR 657 and NUR 658. It sits behind your MyOnline login with the current forms, and it is worth reading before you ever phone a hospital preceptor.

The acute care settings that fit
The catalog asks for supervision by a qualified preceptor across a variety of acute care settings. Bradley's marketing page for the track offers examples ranging from intensive care and trauma to the emergency room and sub-acute care, and says you train at a facility you choose.
The patients are adults and older adults with acute illness. Hospitalist teams, critical care services, emergency departments and specialty inpatient services all fit that description, provided the preceptor is qualified and Bradley approves the site.
On who may supervise you, Bradley's most specific words date from a 2017 webinar for FNP students: NPs, MDs and DOs qualified, NPs were to cover most hours, and PAs, CNSs and CNLs did not. Nothing AG-specific has been posted since; see the preceptor requirements page for the full picture.
Hospitals set their own pace
Nearly every hospital answers to a health system, and many systems add their own student steps on top of Bradley's. Three Illinois examples, each describing only its own policy and saying nothing about Bradley:
- Advocate Health Care routes Illinois NP requests through myClinicalExchange, submitted by the school, and expects the student and school to bring the preceptor. If that preceptor is not on Advocate's payroll, a hospital-school-employer agreement is needed first, and Advocate warns it can run to three months.
- Northwestern Medicine reviews north and northwest suburban requests at a monthly committee, only for schools holding a current affiliation agreement, with its own staff first in line; the reply can take one to two months.
- Carle Health, owner since April 2023 of the Methodist, Proctor and Pekin hospitals around Peoria, takes NP rotation requests by online form and is clear that a request is no promise of a place.

A timeline for a first acute rotation
Bradley's rules fix the start and the end of this timeline. The third step is our suggestion, built from the lead times hospitals publish.

- Midpoint of the semester before NUR 656The preceptor signs the DocuSign packet, backed by their license, curriculum vitae, liability coverage and the hospital's address.
- Before the termBradley clears the preceptor and hospital, the contract is executed, and your preceptor and site show as approved in Typhon.
- First shiftOn or after the first day of the semester, never earlier.
Shifts, logging and telehealth
Acute care preceptors often work 12-hour shifts, and 200 hours is roughly 17 of them. Across a 15-week semester that is a little more than one shift a week; packed into a 7-week term it becomes two or three a week, which is hard to fit around a full-time job.
Bradley's handbook puts scheduling on you: every practicum day you set up is one you must attend, clear of clashes with work. If you work nights or rotate, line up your calendar against the preceptor's before anyone signs.
Log every shift, patients included, in Typhon inside a week. Telehealth is governed by a telemedicine document the handbook mentions for the AG tracks but Bradley has not posted, so clear any virtual encounter with course faculty first. The Typhon page covers what faculty review.

Questions Bradley students ask
How many clinical hours is NUR 656?
Two hundred, and here Bradley's catalog and marketing page match, unlike the third course, which the catalog lifted to 300. Add the 50 in NUR 655 and the 200 in NUR 657, and NUR 656 accounts for part of the 750 acute care hours the current catalog sets.
Can I do NUR 656 on the unit where I work as an RN?
Bradley is silent on training where you are employed, so ask course faculty before planning on it. The Graduate Professional Behaviors Policy is firm on two points: no pay for practicum work and no relatives as preceptors. Our workplace page covers how to keep the roles apart.
Can a physician assistant precept NUR 656?
Probably not. When Bradley last spelled it out, in a 2017 FNP webinar, PAs were turned away along with CNSs and CNLs because their roles differ from the NP role. No AG rule has been posted since, so read the AGACNP clinical packet in MyOnline before approaching a PA.
Which states can I complete NUR 656 in?
The approved state you were admitted from or live in. Bradley's state table marks AGACNP as a yes in 46 states, with Tennessee, New Hampshire, Maryland and California the exceptions, and New York residents must train outside New York. Your RN license must also be valid where the hospital is.
Does NUR 656 require the skills bootcamp?
No. In the 2026-27 catalog the bootcamp gates only NUR 658; for NUR 656 you need the pathophysiology, assessment and pharmacology core. The bootcamp still has to fit somewhere before your third management course, so mark it when you plan the year.
