Iowa in Bradley's table, then and now
Iowa reads YES in each NP column of the licensure table Bradley links from its State Disclosures page. In the archived copy of March 28, 2025, only the FNP column did. Psy/Mental Health, Geriatric - Acute and Geriatric - Primary read NO then and have since changed, as in eight other states.

Iowa's checklist for a school from another state
Iowa's nursing board, which sits inside the state licensing agency known as DIAL, gives no approval to programs from other states, yet its page for them still sets duties. Permission to operate is the first, and Iowa assigns it to its Bureau of Iowa College Aid, not the nursing board. The rest of the list: obey Iowa law on top of home-state rules, hand over data whenever the Board asks, staff Iowa clinicals with faculty and preceptors licensed there, and write clinical contracts that divide responsibilities, leave learning under faculty control, come up for annual review and include termination terms.
Nearly all of that is Bradley's and the site's business. Your share is the license: the Board wants licensed students in Iowa clinicals holding a license good in Iowa, whether Iowa's own or a multistate one, and it names the program and the facility as the ones who approve preceptors. Iowa Code 152.1 shields unlicensed students only, so it gives a practicing RN no cover.
Bradley's public pages are silent on Iowa College Aid approval, so ask the Office of Online and Distance Education before committing to an Iowa site.
ARNP preceptors in a full practice state
Iowa's NPs carry the ARNP title, and the AANP lists Iowa as a full practice state, so an Iowa ARNP can teach you with no collaborating physician involved. For ARNP programs, rule 616.16 in Iowa's nursing chapter (481 IAC) steers most preceptorship time toward ARNPs or physicians working in the student's own role and population focus, requires the preceptor's license to come from the state where they practice, and has written preceptorship agreements reviewed yearly.
Bradley's 2017 preceptor webinar pointed the same way, with NPs holding most hours, so a PMHNP student should aim for psychiatric ARNPs and an AGACNP student for acute care ARNPs; see preceptor requirements. Iowa City's University of Iowa Health Care and MercyOne are among the names Iowa NP students search, along with UnityPoint Health, which handed its Peoria hospitals to Carle in 2023 and carries on in Iowa. Des Moines and Cedar Rapids add independent practices; none has a published Bradley tie.
The Quad Cities and the license line
NCSBN lists Iowa's compact start as January 19, 2018. An Iowa resident can therefore carry one multistate license across Iowa and the other compact states. It stops at the Mississippi, since Illinois stays out of the compact and licenses its nurses through IDFPR alone.
The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro straddles that line, with about 175,000 of its 380,000 residents on the Iowa side in 2025 Census estimates. A Moline nurse who wants a Davenport practice needs Iowa's single-state license, since Illinois residents cannot hold a multistate one, and Bradley's handbook treats the rotation as bordering-state work to clear with the advisor or department chair before the semester. Can Iowa residents take Bradley's online PMHNP now?
Bradley's live state table marks Iowa YES for the PMHNP, and for both adult-gerontology tracks, after a March 2025 copy that read NO in all three. Bradley gives no date for the change or the table, so check the current version on bradley.edu/state-disclosures and confirm with admissions before you apply.
Does my Iowa multistate license cover every Bradley clinical?
It works at Iowa sites and in other compact states, but Bradley ties clinicals to your approved home or admission state, so any rotation elsewhere needs your advisor's agreement before the semester. Illinois, outside the compact, needs its own license from IDFPR.
Does an Iowa preceptor have to hold an Iowa license?
Iowa's guidance for programs based elsewhere wants faculty and preceptors who work in Iowa licensed for Iowa, through Iowa's own license or a multistate one, and its ARNP preceptorship rule expects the preceptor to be licensed in the state where they work. Bradley adds its own test: the license must be active and unencumbered, or approval may be refused.
Can an Iowa ARNP earn CE credit for precepting me?
Yes. Iowa's continuing education rules turn a preceptorship of at least 60 hours, inside an organized program, into 6 contact hours at license renewal, backed by paperwork from the supervising school. Before the rotation ends, ask Bradley how it produces that record so your ARNP can file it.
