Bradley University clinicals in Illinois, the home state

Illinois is Bradley University's home state, and Bradley's state table marks all four online NP specialties as meeting Illinois requirements. Clinicals here call for an Illinois RN license from IDFPR, since Illinois stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, plus a plan for the student offices that large Illinois health systems run alongside Bradley's own approval.

What Bradley's table says for Illinois

Every nurse practitioner column in Bradley's current state table reads YES for Illinois. That is the online nursing document Bradley links from its State Disclosures page, and it groups programs by specialty rather than by degree, so each column reads as applying whether you are in the master's, the doctorate or a certificate.

Illinois carries no footnote, unlike New York, California or Ohio. The two leadership programs are missing from the table here as in every other state, which leaves leadership students without a licensure answer to read; that question belongs with the Office of Online and Distance Education. Bradley's on-campus tables on the same page also mark Illinois as meeting requirements for each campus nursing program listed there.

Because nothing on the document shows when it was last revised, read it again each semester. The state disclosures guide covers every column and footnote nationwide.

Peoria, Westlake Hall and what home state means for an online student

The Department of Nursing sits in Westlake Hall on Bradley's Peoria campus at 1501 W Bradley Ave, a mile from downtown and, as Bradley puts it, three hours from Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. Illinois is also Bradley's home state under SARA, the reciprocity agreement Bradley has joined, so a complaint the university's own process cannot resolve goes to the Illinois Board of Higher Education's online complaint system.

A Peoria address for the school does not make Peoria your clinical site. Faculty arrange practicums at Peoria agencies for campus BSN and accelerated BSN students, and that arrangement stays with the campus programs. Online graduate students choose their preceptors and train close to home while Bradley approves each preceptor and facility, so a nurse in Rockford, the Metro East or the Chicago suburbs searches near home.

Campus still calls some online students back. FNP students spend two days in Peoria each October at the FNP Bootcamp, which has to come before NUR 679, and the 2026-27 catalog adds one on-site skills bootcamp for both adult-gerontology tracks ahead of NUR 658 and NUR 668, dates not yet published. For an Illinois FNP student it is a short drive; the FNP Bootcamp page shows how to plan clinical weeks around it.

Illinois NP practice: collaboration first, full practice later

IDFPR, the state's Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, licenses nurses at every level and keeps separate APRN license types for those holding full practice authority. Section 65-35 of the Nurse Practice Act (225 ILCS 65) ties a practicing APRN to a physician through a signed collaboration document until full practice status arrives, with an exception for APRNs privileged at a hospital, hospital affiliate or ambulatory surgical treatment center. The law asks for neither an employment tie nor the physician's presence on site.

Full practice authority comes through Section 65-43. An NP files a notarized attestation with IDFPR showing 4,000 clinical hours since first national certification, in the certification area and in collaboration with a physician, plus 250 hours of continuing education or training; the written agreement then falls away. Two limits survive it: Schedule II narcotics need a physician consultation relationship, and benzodiazepines stop at a 120-day supply before consultation. The AANP files Illinois under reduced practice, and both sections are set to sunset on January 1, 2028 along with the Nurse Practice Act.

Either status works for your search, because Bradley's published rules look at the preceptor's role, setting and license rather than practice authority. Illinois also gives preceptors a reason to agree: supervising one APRN student through a semester or quarter is worth 10 hours of CE credit on an Illinois APRN renewal, to a ceiling of 30, with the proof issued by the school. The Illinois NP practice guide goes deeper.

Your license here: the statute, Bradley's rule and the compact gap

On paper, Illinois would let you train on another state's license. The Act's student exemption, 50-15(b)(10), reaches nurses holding another state's RN license while they study in an Illinois graduate nursing program, as long as faculty supervision meets terms the school and the clinical organization agree on. Bradley asks more: a current license, clear of encumbrance, issued by whichever state hosts each clinical course. Bradley's requirement is the one you answer to, so an Illinois clinic means an Illinois license.

Illinois also makes nursing schools based elsewhere apply for approval before placing students here, through section 1300.340(n) of Title 68 of its Administrative Code, with Illinois-licensed faculty and a two-year approval term. Bradley is based in Illinois, so none of that paperwork touches its students' Illinois placements.

The compact is where Illinois parts company with its neighbors. Of the 43 compact jurisdictions NCSBN lists, none is Illinois, and its map shows no move toward joining, while Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Indiana all belong. A multistate license from any of them carries no privilege at an Illinois site, and an Illinois resident cannot hold one at all. The RN license page handles the border cases.

Central Illinois systems: OSF HealthCare and Carle Health

Each system below is described by its own published policy, not as a place that hosts Bradley students; no Bradley page names the systems that hold agreements with it.

OSF HealthCare, headquartered in Peoria, runs no application for NP students. Its education page lists one mailbox for advanced practice provider students, APRNs and DNP clinical-track students among them, and another for office and home-care experiences in MSN or DNP leadership and education tracks. OSF posts no deadline or turnaround, so a first message that names your track, course, hours, semester and any willing OSF provider does the most work.

Carle Health asks NP students for an online Clinical Rotation Application and says that finishing it is no promise of a placement. Carle also took over the Peoria-area hospitals that once carried the UnityPoint name: Methodist, Proctor and Pekin, with their clinics, joined Carle on April 1, 2023. A preceptor at any of them sends you through Carle's process. The Peoria preceptor guide adds independent and community options.

The Chicago area: Advocate, Northwestern Medicine and Rush

The Chicago-area systems are the ones that publish lead times, and those lead times are long. Advocate Health Care accepts NP clinical-hour requests only through myClinicalExchange, filed by the school's coordinator once an affiliation agreement exists. By Advocate's own account it leaves locating an Illinois NP preceptor to the student and school, and a preceptor employed outside Advocate and Aurora triggers a three-party agreement that can run up to three months. Its general guidance is about two months from request to start.

Northwestern Medicine's north and northwest suburban sites take an APRN/PA/MSN/DNP placement application, reviewed by a committee monthly, and ask applicants to allow four to eight weeks for a reply. Northwestern places a student only when the school holds a live affiliation agreement, its own staff get priority, and the system notes that requests usually exceed openings. Its west suburban form is not meant for APRN students logging patient care hours, and Rush posts undergraduate rotation details with no NP route found.

Endeavor Health and UChicago Medicine are two more large Illinois systems. Where a system posts no NP student route, the search starts with an individual clinician willing to teach, and Bradley then handles the site agreement. See Chicago-area preceptors for the metro in detail.

Why Illinois Bradley students choose us

We know Illinois route by route: which systems want a request through their own channel, how long each one takes, and where an independent practice moves faster. Your placement advisor works through your corner of Illinois for preceptors whose setting fits your Bradley course, primary care for FNP and AGPCNP, acute care for AGACNP and mental health for PMHNP, and confirms every Illinois license is active and unencumbered before you meet.

We then gather what the preceptor packet asks for, license, CV, malpractice coverage and site address, so the DocuSign packet reaches Bradley complete well ahead of its deadline, and we start lining up your next practicum while you are still in the current one. Should a preceptor leave partway through a course, the search for a replacement begins the same day. Use the form below to send your home city, your track and the practicum course coming up.

Questions Bradley students ask

Is Bradley's online NP program approved for Illinois residents?

Bradley's state table marks all four NP specialties as meeting Illinois' educational requirements for licensure, and CCNE accredits Bradley's nursing degrees from the BSN through the DNP, along with its post-graduate APRN certificates. IDFPR's list of approved Illinois nursing programs covers only pre-licensure programs, so it shows Bradley's BSN routes and has no graduate section to consult. The accreditation page has the detail.

Can I use my Missouri or Iowa multistate license for Illinois clinicals?

No. Illinois sits outside the compact, which means multistate privileges end at the Illinois border. Illinois statute does exempt out-of-state RNs enrolled in its graduate programs, yet Bradley requires a license from the state where the clinical course happens, and Bradley's rule governs you. Apply to IDFPR early so the Illinois license is active before your first hour.

Does Advocate find NP preceptors for Illinois students?

Advocate's placement pages say it leaves finding a preceptor for Illinois nurse practitioner students to the student and the school. A physician or APRN can precept, the school's coordinator files the request in myClinicalExchange, and a preceptor employed outside Advocate and Aurora needs a three-party agreement that Advocate says can take up to three months.

What happened to UnityPoint's hospitals in Peoria?

Methodist Hospital, Proctor Hospital, Pekin Hospital and their area clinics joined Carle Health on April 1, 2023, with Carle replacing UnityPoint as the parent organization in central Illinois. UnityPoint's Peoria pages no longer load, so a preceptor at one of those sites points you to Carle's online Clinical Rotation Application.

How far ahead should an Illinois student start a hospital placement?

Work backward from Bradley's packet deadline, the midpoint of the semester before your course, then add the hospital's own clock: about two months at Advocate, longer when a new three-party agreement is needed, and four to eight weeks for a Northwestern Medicine answer. Outpatient practices usually move faster, which is why many Illinois students start there.

Bradley lets you choose your preceptors. We find the ones worth choosing.

Tell us your Bradley track, your city and your next practicum course. We line up preceptors who fit the NUR course and gather the license, CV and malpractice details the DocuSign packet asks for, well before the midterm of the semester before you start.

  • Preceptors matched to the course: primary care for FNP and AGPCNP, acute care teams for AGACNP, mental health settings for PMHNP
