A preceptor gap rarely ends a Bradley program, but it can move one practicum course to a later semester, and every course that depends on it moves too. How much time you lose depends on your track's course chain, Bradley's time limits and how quickly the next preceptor is approved. The fix is to plan every remaining practicum as a single package now, with your academic advisor.

How one gap becomes a longer delay

Bradley's practicum courses are chained by prerequisites, so a course that slips pulls the rest of the chain with it. Online students are registered each term according to their program of study, which means a change in the chain is something your advisor reworks with you rather than something you fix by picking a new section.

Two chains carry an extra hinge. FNP students must finish the yearly October bootcamp on the Peoria campus before NUR 679, and Bradley's welcome site adds that attendees have to be registered in one of the three earlier primary care courses at the time. Because the bootcamp runs once a year, a slip that moves you out of those courses in October can hold NUR 679 until the next one. The limits that matter when time slips

Time to finish: nursing's catalog page gives master's students five years and doctoral students seven, counted from enrollment, yet the university's general graduate rules set five for everyone. Ask your advisor which applies to you.
Grades and attempts: a B is the floor in every NUR course, and each course allows two repeats or re-enrollments across your whole Bradley career, with drops inside the first fortnight left out of the count.
Leave of absence: up to 12 consecutive months, with no clinical hours during the leave. Outside a leave, Bradley expects continuous registration; sit out a fall and a spring together and you apply again.
Site refusals: the Graduate Clinical Requirements Policy warns that a clinical agency can refuse a student, for example over a background or drug screen result, and that this can delay or block graduation.
Location: a move to a new state during the delay changes where clinicals may happen, so read relocating during the program before you pack.

An Incomplete or a later section: two different paths

If the course is mostly done, an Incomplete may keep it in the current term. The department's conditions are spelled out on behind on clinical hours: in short, most of the coursework done at B level, two approvals, and a finish no later than week 11 of the next semester. Bradley does not publish whether the next course in the chain can start while an Incomplete is open, so ask your advisor.

If the course has barely started, dropping and re-enrolling later may be the cleaner path. For online students, a drop begins with a word to your advisor and to Student Financial Services, then the Drop Course Request Form inside MyOnline. Watch the attempt limit: a drop after the first two weeks counts toward the two permitted repeats or re-enrollments. The semester calendar page covers the term structure and drop rules.

What a later finish touches outside the course

A later graduation moves more than the commencement date, which in 2026-27 falls on December 19 for fall and May 15 for spring, with summer ending August 20. Certification exams from the AANP or ANCC follow graduation, so a job offer tied to certification moves with them. If you have a start date with an employer, tell them early.

Clearance can also age. Your Viewpoint Screening clearance was due early in the program, and Bradley's 2017 webinar warned that a site may want a fresh background check once the original is older than twelve months. Insurance proof also recurs, in the term before clinicals begin and again each year in February. A longer program means more of these renewals, so keep your Viewpoint Screening account current.

Questions Bradley students ask

Can I still graduate on time if my Bradley preceptor falls through?

Sometimes. Three things decide it: the hours outstanding, the weeks remaining and the speed of the replacement's approval. Extra weekly hours or an Incomplete finished by week 11 of the next semester can keep a course from moving. Tell course faculty right away and see preceptor dropped out for the first steps.

How long do I have to finish a Bradley MSN or DNP?

Nursing's page in the 2026-27 catalog sets five years for a master's and seven for a doctorate. Bradley's university-wide graduate rules name five years for every degree and certificate, so doctoral students see two different limits. Ask your academic advisor which limit applies to your program before planning a longer path.

Does a leave of absence pause Bradley's time limit?

Bradley's graduate regulations cap a leave at 12 consecutive months and require continuous registration otherwise, and the nursing handbook bars clinical hours during a leave. Neither source says whether the leave pauses the five- or seven-year clock, so get a written answer from your advisor before relying on it.

Will I need a new background check if my Bradley program runs longer?

A site may ask for one. Bradley's 2017 webinar mentioned sites that wanted a new check once the student's original passed a year old, and a longer program makes that more likely. Ask each new site what it needs, and budget time for a fresh check if the site asks.
