Credentialing and approvals at Bradley: who signs off on what

A Bradley University practicum clears four gates before hour one: your own clearance, the preceptor, the facility and the Typhon entry. A different role owns each gate, from the clinical coordinator who reviews your background check to the course faculty who approve your preceptor in Typhon. Knowing who holds which decision tells you where to send every question.

Four gates between you and hour one

Treat approval as four separate checks that all have to turn green. Your personal clearance comes first: the background check, drug screen, immunizations, physical and insurance under the Graduate Clinical Requirements Policy. Next is the preceptor, approved through the DocuSign packet. Then the facility, cleared by a clinical agency agreement. Last is the Typhon record that ties your preceptor and site to the course.

Each gate has its own owner and its own clock, and a single open gate stops the whole practicum. That is how a student can hold an approved packet and still be unable to start, or be fully cleared with nowhere approved to go. The roles below carry the titles Bradley uses; its public pages identify staff by role, and so does this guide.

Program leaders show up in the paper trail too. Incomplete grades in nursing run through the Program Director and the Chairperson of Nursing, and in 2017 the program director offered to pre-screen prospective NUR 407 preceptors before students built a packet. Titles shift over the years, so the current welcome site for your track is the best guide to who holds each job now.

The approval sequence, step by step

  1. Personal clearance by first-semester midtermYour items go into Viewpoint Screening, and the Department of Nursing reviews them with the clinical coordinator. Answer any notice within 24 hours.
  2. Preceptor decisionYour DocuSign packet is reviewed, and the answer comes back as approved or not approved.
  3. Facility clearanceThe agency or affiliation agreement for the site is completed or confirmed. A site with its own contract can take longer, so this step often runs in parallel with the packet. See the clinical agency agreement.
  4. Typhon requestYou add the preceptor and agency in Typhon; course faculty approve it, and the record then fills in on later logs.
  5. Term startPracticum hours begin only once the scheduled semester is underway, never earlier, and each day is logged within seven days.

Typhon: the last sign-off

Typhon is where approvals become visible. Bradley's welcome sites say Typhon access arrives by B-Mail one or two weeks before your first clinical course and has to be opened within 72 hours. In the 2017 FNP webinar, students then requested their preceptor and agency inside Typhon, course faculty approved the entry, and from then on those details filled in automatically.

After that, the handbook's rule takes over: hours and, for NP and DNP students, patient data go into Typhon within seven days of each practicum day. A preceptor or site without an approved Typhon entry leaves you nothing to log against, so confirm the approval before your first day. If an entry sits unapproved as the term opens, raise it with course faculty rather than logging hours you may have to re-enter. More on Bradley Typhon.

Who to ask about what

  • Clearance items, a Viewpoint Screening notice or a registration hold: the Office of Online and Distance Education.
  • Whether a preceptor or setting fits a course: course faculty, before the packet goes in.
  • Packet status or a facility's contract: the Office of Online and Distance Education.
  • A move, a bordering-state rotation or a deployment: your academic advisor or the department chair, before the semester.
  • Anything else, or no idea who: your Student Support Coach.

Bradley's public pages list roles rather than names, and the contact routes for each sit in MyOnline and on your track's welcome site. Asking the right office first usually saves a week of forwarded messages, which matters most in the month before a packet deadline. Keep your questions short and include your track, course number and term.

When an approval is refused

Refusals can come from either direction. Bradley can decline a preceptor, and its welcome sites warn that an infraction on a preceptor's license may block approval. A clinical agency can also turn a student away at its own discretion, for example over a conviction, a positive drug screen or an incomplete vaccination record, and the Clinical Requirements Policy notes that this can delay or prevent graduation.

Open clearance problems carry their own consequences: missing the 24-hour response window can block registration for the next term and, in serious cases, lead to dismissal. The practical defense is time. Submitting early leaves room to replace a preceptor or site before the term, and the Graduate Clinical Requirements Policy page covers the student side in full.

How we clear the path to every approval

Approvals move faster when what reaches Bradley is complete and correct, and that is our focus. We confirm each preceptor's credential, setting and license standing before introducing them, collect the packet documents, and gather the facility details the agreement needs, so the clinical coordinator, the agreement office and course faculty each receive a clean file.

We track your four gates alongside you and flag whichever one is lagging, whether it is a packet deadline, a facility contract or a Typhon entry waiting on faculty. Bradley makes every decision; our work makes each decision easy to reach. When a preceptor withdraws, we start the replacement search right away. See how it works or reach your placement advisor through the form below.

Questions Bradley students ask

Who approves my preceptor at Bradley?

The university approves both the preceptor and the facility. In practice, your DocuSign packet is reviewed and you receive an approved or not approved answer, and course faculty then approve the preceptor and agency entry in Typhon. For NUR 407, Bradley's 2017 webinar said course faculty email the decision directly.

What does the credentialing coordinator do?

It is the title Bradley's 2017 preceptor webinars gave the staff role that completes the clinical agency agreement with each site. Bradley's current welcome sites list agency and affiliation agreements under the Office of Online and Distance Education, so that office is where questions about a site's contract go today.

Does my academic advisor find preceptors for me?

Your academic advisor is a nursing faculty member who handles practicum questions, supervised clinical experiences and notices about moves or bordering-state rotations. Locating the preceptor stays with you under Bradley's model, but an advisor is a good sounding board on whether a setting fits your plan of study.

Who reviews my background check and drug screen?

Under the Graduate Clinical Requirements Policy, the Department of Nursing reviews the results together with the clinical coordinator and decides any follow-up. The items are due through Viewpoint Screening by midterm of your first semester, and a notice about a missing item needs a response within 24 hours. See Viewpoint Screening.

Who approves clinical hours during a semester break?

It depends on the hours. With an Incomplete, break-time practicum hours need the lead faculty member's approval. DNP project hours may be earned over breaks only if you passed the previous project course, are enrolled in the next one and have the project mentor's approval. No hours count during a leave of absence.

Bradley lets you choose your preceptors. We find the ones worth choosing.

Tell us your Bradley track, your city and your next practicum course. We line up preceptors who fit the NUR course and gather the license, CV and malpractice details the DocuSign packet asks for, well before the midterm of the semester before you start.

  • Preceptors matched to the course: primary care for FNP and AGPCNP, acute care teams for AGACNP, mental health settings for PMHNP
  • Preceptor license, CV, malpractice coverage and the site address ready for the packet
  • Every practicum in your sequence planned together, close to home in your approved state
